Tobs shell Fayetteville 8-1

The pluses flowed as the Wilson Tobs shelled Fayetteville, 8-1, in a Coastal Plain League summer collegiate baseball game before a turnout in excess of 2,000 on "Thirsty Thursday" in Fleming Stadium.

Every member of the Tobs' starting lineup hit safely, led by shortstop Ellis Lowe's first four-hit game in the CPL. Wilson rapped four SwampDogs' pitchers for 13 hits and scored five runs after two outs in one inning.

"He just went back to basics," Steele said of Lowe, "and tried to spray the ball to the opposite field. He just played pepper with the right fielder -- I know he got three of his hits that way. He didn't try to do too much, and was rewarded for his efforts."

On the mound, starter Tim Adleman and relievers Jerris Springfield and Brennan Dobbins, a trio of right-handers, limited Fayetteville to five hits -- all singles -- and registered 10 strikeouts.

The archrivals were meeting for the first time since Fayetteville defeated Wilson on Monday night to capture the first-half South Division title. The Tobs whittled the SwampDogs' season advantage in the series to 4-3, rising to 2-0 in second-half play and 19-11 overall. Fayetteville departed 1-2 and 17-12, respectively.

"It all kind of runs together," Wilson Manager Jeff Steele said of his team's numerous pluses. "We continued to put the pressure on and did some good things with two outs. That was a big key to our success.

"It takes a win like that and an effort like that to see how much impact it has on the game."

Trailing 1-0, the Tobs, eight games above .500 for the first time this season, struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning against starting Fayetteville left-handed pitcher Matt Kole. Lowe started the uprising with a bunt single and, with two outs, designated hitter Jake Astor, left fielder Rob Folsom, first baseman Matt Johns and catcher Dale Cornstubble rapped successive singles.

Wilson's lead became 4-1 in the fifth when, with two outs, Folsom drew a bases-loaded walk. Center fielder Bobby Leeper's two-run triple highlighted the four-run eighth. Right fielder Justin Vasquez doubled during the uprising.

Adleman struck out six of the first seven batters he retired and lasted five innings in notching his third win against two losses. Springfield and Dobbins each atoned for shaky outings against Fayetteville on Monday evening with two scoreless innings. Dobbins collected his first save.

"Dobbins extended his appearance," Steele noted and we were able to keep (closer) Jason Sullivan fresh for tonight."

The Tobs visit the SwampDogs this evening before observing July 4 against Wilmington in Fleming Stadium on Saturday night.
