Power-mad Lady Bulldogs win pair

RALEIGH -- The rampaging Barton College softball team pushed its winning streak to a season-high six games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Shaw at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

The Lady Bulldogs of Conference Carolinas outscored the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Lady Bears 27-2 in the twinbill as Barton improved to 13-18 after the pair of five-inning contests.

Barton continued its power surge from Monday's sweep of N.C. Central by belting six home runs Tuesday, including three by Mindy Tripp. The sophomore right fielder finished the day 3 for 5 with six runs batted in.

In the 14-0 win in the opener, junior right-hander Jayme Beacham and freshman right-hander Megan Griffin combined on the three-hit shutout of the Lady Bears (1-8). Neither issued a walk.

Beacham (3-2) was staked to a 10-0 lead after three innings as Barton rapped 10 of its 13 hits. Emily Sale singled in a run in the first inning and Natalie Phipps doubled home two more in the third.

In the third, Amber Fletcher led off with her first homer of the season and freshman Casey Strickland, a Hunt High School product, doubled in a pair.

Tripp bashed a three-run homer in the fifth against Shaw starting and losing pitcher Crystal Saunders, who was also the loser in the second game.

Phipps had three hits, including a pair of doubles.

Barton didn't slow down in the second game as Fletcher singled in two runs in the top of the first and Tripp's two-run blast keyed a five-run second inning.

That would be all Lady Bulldogs freshman right-hander Alona Lawson earned her first career victory. She allowed five hits, walked one batter and struck out three as only Shaw freshman Monica Grimmage's two solo homers spoiled the shutout.

Phipps belted her second homer of the season to lead off the fourth inning and Sale and Tripp connected on solo shots in the fifth. It was the fifth homers of the year for each. Sale hit three in Monday's doubleheader at NCCU.

Fletcher and Tripp had three RBIs each while freshman center fielder Jessica McFadden had two hits in the game and three stolen bases on the day, part of nine for Barton.

The Lady Bulldogs visit Pfeiffer for a Conference Carolinas twinbill on Saturday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Barton does not return to Jeffries Field until Saturday, April 5, against non-conference foe Chowan.
