Wilson whips Ahoskie 8-0 in Fleming

The Wilson American Legion Post 13 baseball team finally got it going again.

After struggling mightily in its last three games, Post 13 pieced together a strong 8-0 win Tuesday over Ahoskie Post 102 in Fleming Stadium to break a three-game losing streak.

"We did a good job tonight," head coach Rusty Dail said. "I'm happy we're playing better than we have been. That's a good sign."

Wilson, which has struggled most notably at the plate, awoke offensively with 12 hits.

First baseman Tripp Sauls went 3 for 4 with an RBI single in the third inning. David Gibbons also had three hits and drove in a run on a triple in the eighth, while Chris Lamm added two RBIs on fielder's choices.

Mitchell Wheeler (2 for 2), Russell Ward, Zac Crumpler and Chris Johnson also had RBIs for Post 13.

"The past few games we haven't been hitting well as a team," Sauls said. "But tonight, 12 hits, that really shows we can come back. ... I think this team's getting tired of not hitting the ball."

Starting pitcher Justin Nygard struck out eight while sprinkling in three hits and one walk through five innings for Wilson (6-7, 3-2 Area One Eastern Division North). Reliever Michael McLawhorn pitched the final four innings, allowing just two hits an one walk, for his first save of the season.

Early on, Post 102 got runners in scoring position in the first and second innings, but Nygard worked free of both jams, striking out the final two batters of each inning.

"It gives you confidence when you get into a jam and get out of it, making good pitches, having the team work behind you," he said.

Dylan Ralph (0-2) took the loss for Post 102 (4-15, 2-5), allowing three runs on six hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings. Nygard and McLawhorn kept Ahoskie from having multi-hit performances, with only Josh Morris hitting for extra bases with a double in the second.

With two hits in the third, Post 13 took a 1-0 lead on Sauls' two-out RBI single down the left-field line, scoring Zack Lee, who reached on a fielder's choice. Then, Wilson stretched its lead to 3-0 with single runs in the fourth and fifth.

Crumpler scored Wheeler on a sacrifice fly, and Lamm scored Lee from second when Ahoskie couldn't complete a double play to end the inning for a 3-0 lead.

"I think, as a team, when we get ahead with runs early, we try to stick to it and try our best to get more and build the biggest lead we can," Sauls said.

Wilson added two runs in the seventh on a squeeze bunt by Lamm and sac fly by Wheeler and tacked on three more in the eighth on RBI singles by Johnson and Ward and an RBI triple by Gibbons.

With the win, Post 13 ended its home slate in Fleming Stadium, playing one final home game at Barton Colege's Nixon Field this weekend. Its next game is tonight at Pitt 160 at South Central High.
