Barton golfers super regional top seed

The Barton College golf team enters Sunday's NCAA Division II super regional ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic region.

The Bulldogs finished second in the Conference Carolinas tournament to Belmont Abbey, who will host the Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional at The Point Lake and Golf Club in Lake Norman.

Sixteen teams participate in the regional. Barton is the top seed in the Atlantic while USC-Aiken is No. 1 in the Southeast.

Joining Barton in the Atlantic will be Conference Carolinas members Belmont Abbey, Coker, Anderson, Pfeiffer and Mount Olive, along with Fayetteville State and Virginia State.

Barton head coach John Hackney said he feels fortunate to draw this bracket considering seven of the eight teams in the Southeast are ranked in the top 25.

The top five teams advance and the top individual from outside the top 5 will move on to the nationals, scheduled for May 14-17 in Houston, Texas.

"It's crunch time, we've got to get it done," Hackney said. "This is probably our most veteran lineup and, hopefully, all our experience will pay off."

Barton will be anchored by Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Jonathan Burke. The junior from Charles B. Aycock High is ranked No. 3 in the region.

Freshman Daniel Castleberry, sophomore Stephen Harrison (Greenfield School) and senior co-captains Neal Jones and Joe Elwell round out the lineup.

Burke (73) and Castleberry (74.5) enter with exceptionally low averages and will be counted upon as Bulldogs' front-runner. Harrison is playing with a torn ACL, but has performed well.

"If those three can put up some good numbers and the other guys can give us something, we're going to be all right," Hackney said.

Barton ranks third in the nation in driving accuracy, but Hackney said the short game would make all the difference in the Greg Norman-designed course with plentiful water hazards.

"Hopefully we can hit the ball straight, but it boils down to avoiding big holes and the short game," Hackney said.

Fans can follow all the action live on the Web site golfstat.com.

"We still don't feel like we've played great in any tourney, so hopefully this will be the one," Hackney concluded.
