Sales tax will help sell community

In the real estate business we often find ourselves selling our community almost as much as an individual house. People moving into an area often have a lot of choices and some of those might be to live outside of Wilson County.

Part of selling our area is to show that the people here are strong supporters of public schools. Potential home buyers are also very interested in property tax rates. It is that combination of factors that puts me on the side of urging people to vote in favor of the sales tax referendum on May 6.

Ask any employers in town and they will tell you Wilson County needs to do whatever is necessary to help our schools with their basic needs. Just this year the fuel bill for the county schools and activity buses will be $75,000.

Using a small sales tax increase to help pay for education, recruiting jobs and better emergency health care for seniors and others is a fiscally smart decision. Those services will be used by everyone, and everyone should pay for them. Plus a favorable vote should encourage county commissioners to hold off or minimize any property tax increases.

Wilson County is a great place to live and work and own a home. Passing the sales tax referendum on May 6 will make that even truer.
