I want to encourage voters to look a little further down on the ballot and find the sales tax referendum and vote for it. While the presidential and gubernatorial and other races may grab more attention, passage of the referendum will have more immediate direct benefits for the people of Wilson County.
The revenues will be used to help recruit new, badly needed jobs to Wilson County. They will be used to help our schools. They will be used to pay for improved emergency health care services for everyone. Equally important, they won't be used to create new bureaucracies or programs that help a few. These are tax revenues that will benefit everyone. And, they would be put to work starting in July, not years from now.
And the price we will pay for these improvements is very small indeed. The tax rate is just one fourth of one penny or a dime on a $40 phone bill. That is a small price for something to help our schools, recruit jobs and provide better health care.
Yes, May 6 will be an important day for the nation and Wilson County voters should be part of that. But Wilson County voters also need to do what they can to bring progress to our county by voting in favor of the sales tax referendum. Please look for it on the ballot. Its good for seniors, working families and our children.
