Power boats hit the water at Buckhorn Lake today

The promise of a beautiful spring weather today should make for a great day of power boat racing at Buckhorn Lake.

The 2008 Wilson Outboard Regatta is the site of this year's American Power Boat Association Outboard Division Southeast Divisonal championships with more than 150 racers expected to compete.

Racing divisions are Modified Outboard, Stock Outboard and J-Class (for junior racers) in both hydroplane and runabout boat frames.

Three one-mile laps on the oval course make up a heat and two heats will be run in each division.

The small craft will skim the water at speeds up to 75 miles per hour and promises to be a treat for racing fans of any kind.

Admission and parking is free to the event, which will begin at 10 a.m. today and Sunday.
