Mudcats blanked by Suns

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Despite outhitting their opponent for the second straight game, the Carolina Mudcats lost 2-0 on Tuesday against the Jacksonville Suns in the Baseball Grounds.

The Mudcats (18-14) fell four games behind first place West Tenn in the Double-A Southern League Northern Division.

After seven scoreless innings by both teams, the Suns (15-17) finally broke the tie when Lucas May singled home Ivan DeJesus in the eighth on an 0-2 pitch into left field.

Jamie Hoffman added a sacrifice fly for the second run.

Chris Volstad (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Carolina, which has gone 2-8 in its last 10 games. Volstad allowed just four hits in 7 1/3 innings but issued a season-high seven walks.

Jacksonville's Jason McDonald went seven scoreless innings before Tanyon Sturtze (1-1) came on in relief.

The Mudcats roped seven hits, including a leadoff double by Cameron Maybin in the fourth, but could not break into the scoring column.

Aaron Thompson will start the series' third game on Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 against Danny Muegge.
