Country music showcase presents gospel show

SMITHFIELD -- Voices of faith are raised in song as the CMS cast presents an inspirational evening of gospel music rooted in Southern tradition. Join the cast as Johnston Community College Country Music Showcase performs "Gospel Jubilee" Aug. 8 and 9. The show opens Aug. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium on the Smithfield campus. Additional shows are scheduled for Aug. 9 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Special guest performers for the August shows are Daniel Adams, Sara Dew, Pam Durham, Julie Hamilton, Somer Overby and Alvin Smith.

The "Gospel Jubilee" shows mark Overby's CMS debut. She lives in Middlesex with husband, Ashley, and enjoys singing, shopping and spending time with family and friends. She is a member of her church choir and is the praise team leader. She is a special guest singer for numerous area churches women's retreats. She performed at the N.C. State Fair in 2006 and 2007. Overby will perform "Sweet Beulah Land" for the shows.

Dreamstate Entertainment LLC was established in 2003 to promote Smith's "Tribute to Elvis." Smith believes in the grace of Jesus and enjoys sharing the blessings of gospel music that was present in the music of Elvis. Smith, of Elm City, has performed in local, regional and national events. Most recent appearances: the Nash Arts Cultural Center and 2008 Mount Olive Pickle Festival. He placed second at the 2008 CSRA Elvis Contest in Augusta, Ga. The JCC Country Music Show is emceed by Debbie Elam of Four Oaks. Musical accompaniment for the JCC Country Music Showcase is provided by The Showcase Band, featuring Melanie Horton of Goldsboro. Other band members include Ken Eubanks of Princeton, Chris Flynn of Greenville, Hugh Jackson of Dunn, Grover Hood of Goldsboro and Brent Shattuck of LaGrange. Back-up vocalists are Yvonne Wheeler, Sandy Millard and Chris Raynor, all of Smithfield. Rounding out the cast is dancer Heather McLamb of Benson.

Individual show tickets bought in advance are $10 for the evening performances and $8 for the Saturday matinee. At the door, tickets are $12 for evening shows and $10 for the matinee.
