CCS falls in tourney final
SMITHFIELD -- The Community Christian varsity girls soccer team fell to No. 1-ranked Trinity of Raleigh, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon in the 1-A Carolina Christian Tournament finals at Johnston Christian.
The Lady Cyclones dropped to 10-3 overall and it was the first loss to a conference opponent in seven matches.
Each team had 17 shots on goal, but Trinity was able to come through when Jamie Myers converted on a corner kick in the 61st minute.
CCS keeper Lindsay Baldridge had 11 saves while Trinity's Abby De la Hoyde stopped eight shots.
Community Christian, tied with Gaston Day for fifth place in the NCCSA1-A rankings, must now wait and see if it will be one of three teams to receive an at-large bid to the eight-team state tournament. The other five schools gained automatic entry by winning conference tournament championships.
"It be a shame if we don't get to play in the state tournament," CCS head coach Ryne Sharp said.
Auburn Smith, Grayson Smith, Kathryn Smith and Meredith Sharp were named to the all-conference team while Kathryn Smith, Baldridge and Caroline Sharp were named to the all-tournament team. Greyson Smith was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.
