Industry managers support tax increase

Wilson's Industrial Management Council voted unanimously at a recent meeting to support the proposed one-quarter cent sales tax increase that will be voted on May 6. This organization represents 22 industrial companies employing approximately 7,000 people in Wilson County and is well aware of the pressure that taxes and fees put on the bottom line of a business.

Business and Industry carry the lion's share of the tax load in most communities, including Wilson. As has been mentioned in previous letters to the editor, property tax is a significant cost to existing industry and an equally significant factor for a company considering locating to Wilson. It must be kept in check.

The proposed sales tax increase will enable our county commissioners to ease this tax burden on everyone, but the impact will be felt most by local industry. This will be good for business and good for Wilson.

The sales tax increase will also put additional dollars into the hands of our school system, which is needed. While money is not the answer to improving education, it is necessary to provide the resources that our educators are calling for.

If you're not sure how to vote on this referendum, then err on the side of providing our elected officials, economic developers and educators the means to do what we need them to do. If your commissioners betray your trust on this issue then voice your disapproval in the voting booth at the next election. This is an important opportunity for Wilson that deserves careful consideration.

The Industrial Management Council recommends we approve the quarter-cent sales tax increase Tuesday as a vote to keep property taxes down, education strong and Wilson moving in the right direction.
