Republicans value ideology over academics, competence

Sarah Palin's contribution to the Republican presidential race is her narrow ideology, not her academic or executive experience, which is meager by any measure.

The Republican Party worships ideology, often at the expense of strong educational achievement. Bush and Palin have exceptional ideological bona fides -- both are creationists, Second Amendment stalwarts, etc. Both are strong in right-wing ideology but anemic in academic success. Bush, Palin and McCain share similar weak academic accomplishments. Bush and McCain partied through their academic years and the extent of Palin's education is a bachelor's degree in journalism/communications.

This paltry record compares to Obama's graduation from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review. Additionally, Obama taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.

The emphasis of ideology over academic achievement speaks to the competency of Republican candidates. This ideological emphasis diminishes our highest offices and their protection of the Constitution and the rule of law. Knowledge of history, economics and particularly constitutional law is a critical competency for our leaders. The last eight years have been very telling. Our government, economy and ultimately our freedoms are eroding.

The party must reverse its tendency to replace intellectual achievement with ideological expediency, or what was created by Jefferson and Adams, esteemed intellectuals of their time, will perish.
