PINETOPS — John Dwight Jefferson, 66, died Saturday, June 9, 2012.

Dwight is preceded in death by his father, Raymond Jefferson, mother, Thelma Jefferson Perry, and a sister, Marion Dilda.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Pinetops Fire Station with the Rev. James Avery officiating. Burial will follow in the Queen Anne Cemetery, Fountain. Dwight graduated from South Edgecombe High School. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Army and served from 1965-68, including service in the Army Special Forces. He graduated from East Carolina University and taught in the Edgecombe County School system for more than 30 years. Dwight was a founding member of the Pinetops Rescue Squad and served as a member for the Edgecombe County squads for more than 40 years.

Mr. Jefferson is survived by a loving family including: daughters, April Jefferson Short and husband, Paul, of Wilmington, Julie Jefferson Martine and husband, Michael, of Hampstead; grandchildren, Katelyn Short, Abigail Short, Benjamin Small and Piper Martine; sisters, Marie McKeel of Tarboro, Edwina Barry of Fountain, Marianne Taylor of Macclesfield; and brother, Roger Jefferson of Pinetops.

He is also survived by a loving extended family full of cousins, nieces, nephews and his Fire and Rescue Squad Family.
