LUCAMA — Dr. E. Hugh Bass, 94, died Thursday, June 14, 2012. A funeral service will be conducted 7 p.m. Monday at Joyner’s Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Pkwy., Wilson. The Rev. William Bussey will officiate. A private burial will be held in Maplewood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening immediately following the service at the funeral home and other times at home.
Dr. Bass was born Oct. 7, 1917 to the late William Thomas Bass and Lizzie Barnes Bass. A native of Wilson County, he graduated from Lucama High School and Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn, Ala. in 1943. During World War II, he served in the Army Veterinary Corps. At the time of his discharge, he was the commanding officer of the Veterinary Inspection Service for the State of Michigan. Discharged as a Captain in the Army Veterinary Corps in 1946, he returned home and practiced Veterinary Medicine in Wilson County for 34 years. He was a member of the Wilson County Veterinary Association, the N.C. Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Bass was a member of Westview Christian Church, Lucama Masonic Lodge No. 527, the New Bern Constituency of Scottish Rite Masons, the Sudan Shrine Temple, the Wilson County Shrine Club, Robert B. Anderson Post 13 of the American Legion, AARP, and the 40 & 8.
He was preceded in death by his wife and best friend of 66 years, Rachel Daniel Bass; two sisters, Elizabeth Bass and Alberta B. Creech; seven brothers, Silas, Walton, Emmette, J.T., Fred, William and Vernon Bass.
Dr. Bass is survived by several nieces and nephews.
