Wilson area full of activity this weekend




Record high temperatures will set the stage for another event-filled weekend in Wilson. Here are some of the activities going on in the area:

 

Visual Arts Tour

A sneak peek of Wilson County artists' studios and workshops happens today during the Visual Arts Studio Tour, sponsored by the Arts Council of Wilson and the Wilson Visitors Bureau. The tour runs from 9 to 5 and includes more than two dozen artists and craftsmen. This free tour is spread out over artists' studios and some local businesses that are hosting some of the artists and their work. Wilson Area Heart Walk

The Wilson Area Heart Walk will begin this morning at 9 at the Wilson Recreation Department, 500 Sunset Road. Volunteers hope to reach this walk’s goal of raising $220,000. Help the American Heart Association beat heart disease and stroke, the nation’s number one and number three killers. For more information, visit www.startwilsonnc.org.

 

Poker Run Fundraiser

The Southern Iron Motorcycle Club will hold a poker run fundraiser for Cole Williamson this afternoon, starting at 1 at Carolina Billiards on Airport Boulevard and ending at Handlebars on Highway 301 in Lucama around 6. Cole is a 7-year-old with congenital heart problems who has endured several surgeries. Funds raised this afternoon and this evening will help offset the family’s medical expenses. Barbecue plate dinners will be sold at Handlebars and the Boogie Chillins band will be playing.

 

Hattie Daniels Day

Hattie Daniels Day 2009 will be held today from 11 to 2 at the day care center at1900 Lipscomb Road. The event will feature food, entertainment, games, educational material, and blood pressure and blood sugar screenings provided by the Wilson County Health Department.

 

Toys for Tots

Factory Mattress and Bedrooms on Forest Hills Road, in conjunction with the Golden Leaf Detachment of the Marine Corps League, will host a barbecue sandwich fundraiser from 11to 5 today in support of the Toys for Tots program. Sandwiches are $5 and proceeds go toward the Wilson County Toys for Tots bicycle purchasing program. Factory Mattress and Bedrooms is located in front of Lowe’s at 2503-A Forest Hills Road.

 

Summerville Academy Open House

J & L Summerville Academy will host an open house today from 11 to 2 at its new location at 618 N. Tarboro Street. The academy offers a structured day program for suspended students, an after-school program, and a summer camp.

 

Wings Over Wayne

The Wings Over Wayne air show will held today and Sunday at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro. Gates to the base will open at 9 a.m. each day with the show beginning at 10 and ending at 4. It is a free event and open to the public. Food and drink will not be allowed on the base, but refreshments will be available to purchase. Backpacks, coolers and large bags will also not be allowed. Camera bags, purses, lawn chairs and diaper bags will be allowed on the base but will be subject to being searched. For more information, visit www.wingsoverwayneairshow.com .
