I'd like to think most parents take that responsibility seriously. But we can't possibly think of every single thing we can do to make our children safe or even know what to look for. Luckily, Wilson County has a coalition called "Safe Kids Wilson County" that is part of a national effort to promote child safety. This group works to prevent accidental injuries and deaths to children by promoting changes in attitudes, behavior and the environment. Tuesday, Safe Kids Wilson County will host an open house at the Wilson County Emergency Services facility from noon to 1 p.m. to explain the services they offer the community and to recruit new volunteers. "We're an all-volunteer group," said Dot Tabron, the co-coordinator for Safe Kids Wilson County. "The more volunteers we have, the more people we can reach with our safety information." Safe Kids Wilson County provides a variety of services, including instructing parents on the proper installation and use of car seats, poisoning dangers, water safety and playground safety. If you request it, Safe Kids will go through your home and point out safety hazards and suggest ways to correct them, making your house as danger-free as possible. Safe Kids is available to speak to groups about child safety and they frequently have booths at local events, giving out information. The group will participate in a Department of Transportation health fair at the Wilson County Fairgrounds this week, will hand out information at next week's Fire Prevention Week event at Lucama's Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, and will soon assist a Clayton area PTO with child seat checks. If you can't attend the open house tomorrow, the public can visit the Wilson County Emergency Services building every Tuesday and Thursday for more information and even on-the-spot car seat checks. Tuesday hours are 10 a.m. to noon and Thursday's are from 2 to 4 p.m. As I mentioned earlier, one of the reasons for this open house is to recruit new volunteers to work with Safe Kids Wilson County. "We need to get people interested in helping us help the community," Tabron said. "No training is required for volunteering, but it is available for people who want more information on, say, carbon dioxide detectors and bicycle helmet safety." Safe Kids Wilson County's motto is, "We want you to leave here safer than you arrived." The group is giving you the opportunity to do just that by visiting tomorrow's open house. For more information, call Tammy Williford or Dot Tabron at 237-0789. On the map runs on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.
