Wilson County Board of Education Personnel Changes

Each month the Wilson County Board of Education releases its personnel list, which shows employees who have been hired or resigned from the system during the past month. Because school administrators and teachers touch the lives of so many people, The Wilson Times publishes the list each month to help the community keep up with the comings and goings in the school system.

Chestnut has been at the helm at Darden since 2006 when he returned to Wilson County Schools after having served as the principal of Northampton County High School.

I´m a proud parent of two Springfield Middle students, they are not the best students in the world, but they pass their grades; I´ve always had lots of support from teachers and Principal over there, Mr.Barringer, who has always show interestes in how my kids were doing, and what do we do at home to help them out. With Mr.Barringers assistance and support, and I would add, profesionalism, I know my kids are at the best school they could be. IF your kids don´t do their best, don´t blame on the teachers or Principals. Go to the meetings, help them out, take their advice, and make sure your kids do what they have to do while at home, instead of too much TV, too much Wii or Playstation, or too much spoiling. It´s my opinion. I hope Mr.Barringer doesn´t leave the school till at least my kids graduate, I can´t imagine a more supportive Principal than him.

erb, would you last name be Barringer? I beg your pardon, the test scores have everything to do with the principal. Mr. Barringer knows which students at Springfield failed the EOG and I think even he would agree that too many of them are from fine families that take the time to raise their children properly. What has happened at that school is a shame. And yes, the parents of the students there know what is and isn't going on. That's why everyone is so upset.

to erb: I volunteer at that school almost 3 days a week. I know what I see. You on the other hand ARE AN OUTSIDER! We have GREAT parents at SMS. And as far as spelling, you need to RE READ your own post before you jump on someone else! WE KNOW WHAT WE SEE WITH OUR OWN EYES AT SPRINGFIELD. Come on out there and see for yourself!!

I have been reading the comments on Ron Barringer, and here are a few on my thoughts as an outsider from another school system. Some of the comments are not from highly educated people according to their grammar and spelling and the test scores have nothing to do with the principal of a school, but from the teachers in the classrooms teaching the children. Mostly, what is wrong with the school system today is not the teachers, principals or the superintendents, but the parents at home that do not have time to raise the children that that brought into the world because they are busy with their own agendas in life. Before you point you cast the first stone, make sure you life and children are where they should be.

Wow all this against Mr Barringer...all I know is he has always been very respectful and helpful with me and my son thru this past year at Springfield. I like Mr Barringer. There were a couple of incidents concerning my son with his grades and an argument/fight with another student and it was easy to talk with Mr Barringer. He was genuinely concerned about making sure my son had a good year in school and worked with me easily with any problems or concerns I had. Im not sure my son felt like Mr Barringer was holding his best interest yet he often encouraged my son in the halls..which turns out not to be so cool with his peers my son says..lol..but Mr Barringer always keep an eye out whether encouragement or discipline for my son and I know that played a big difference in my son finishing his year successfully.

June 12, 2009 Northwest Elementary School Principal Appointed Charles Chestnut, principal of Darden Middle School in Wilson County Schools, has been appointed the principal of Northwest Elementary School. He will replace Roscoe Locke who is retiring. “I am very excited and pleased to have the opportunity to work for Pitt County Schools,” Chestnut stated. “I am looking forward to working with child-centered educators who believe that all students can learn. It has been my experience that when all stakeholders work cooperatively, beginning with the end in mind, high student achievement occurs. I envision working in a school setting in which every student is provided an appropriate support structure in order to be successful. That support structure may range from enrichment opportunities to tutorial services depending on individual student needs.” Chestnut has been in education for 18 years and has experience at the elementary, middle and high school settings. His background in school administration is extensive, having served for 10 years as a school administrator. He also worked for three years as an Educational Consultant for the NC Department of Public Instruction’s School Improvement Division. During his time there, he worked to apply best instructional practices and strategies to assist low-performing schools in achieving their annual growth, performance and Adequate Yearly Progress goals. “Although I am originally from Kinston, I consider Greenville my second home in that I attended East Carolina University as both an undergraduate and graduate student and was a resident in the area for approximately eleven years,” Chestnut added. Chestnut earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education and Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from East Carolina University. He was also an active member of the Greenville community as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated participating in activities such as Adopt-a-Highway, the homeless shelter, and voter registration.

Mr. Barringer needs to GO ASAP!! It's a shame what has happened out there. It's a shame how he treats our kids and the way he treats us as their parents. Folks these are not the unbehaved, poor grades, trouble makers we are talking about either. These are the students that any school would be proud to have. He makes them not want to go, much less enjoy it! The only way to succeed in "HIS" school is to be able to improve his social status. Otherwise, "If you come to my office again with a problem, you'll be suspendeed!!! I do so wish CO would admit their mistake and let him go. He's not a good choice for a middle school principal. Not ours, no anywhere.

Was Mr. Chestnut given the option to resign or get fired? One of the parents' stated the reason he is resigning is b/c he doesn't want to go to Daniels.

The problem with WCS is not Dr. Larry. It is the school board and voters in WC. The school board must approve everything. Now we all know that Dr. Larry is the "Puppet Master" who pulls the strings of the school board members and the voters keep the same board members. So this is a win/win for Dr. Larry aka "Puppet Master." When principals leave, the overall morale of the school district is a Level 1 (even after retesting) and parents aren't happy, complete change starts at the top. I would like to change the slogan from LARRY FOR WAKE COUNTY! To "LARRY, ANYWHERE BUT HERE!!" $300,000 is this true!?

Are we going to be informed of all the faculty members not returning next school year since you are informing us of the changes or is WCS going to keep that from the public? I understand that Wednesday many teachers, teacher assistance and WCS staff were dismissed. Maybe as taxpayers and voters we should contact Raleigh to express our concern that they should start cutting personnel salaries at the administrative level and keep the critical personnel (teachers, bus drivers, teacher assistance) since they do all the work. True leadership would cut their salaries and perks before cutting the foundation of a building before letting it collapse.

Central Office is aware of what is going on with Springfield. Obviously this new "Action Plan" set in place by CO is to help him????? One can only hope. The students and staff out there are the ones who are suffering. Let's hope that this Action Plan works and Springfield gets back to the School is was BRB (before Ron Barringer)!

How could the Board of Education possibly ever renew Ronald Barringer's contract until the year 2013? They have been aware of problems with him there since last year. How is this fair to the students and teachers? His agenda is ego driven and only the people that can scratch his back get theirs scratched in return. Unfortunately, at the expense of the students, the test scores show what harm has been done. Wake up school board. Listen to the parents you serve. We are your eyes and ears. You, nor your children will ever be treated with the disrespect many of us have had to endure from Mr. Barringer during his two years at Springfield.

Why do we have at least 3 people doing the same job & getting paid a good chunk of change for it? Patty Saunder-Smith (Assistant Superintendent in charge of Educational Services), Cynthia Floyd (Executive Director of Student Services) and Beverly Woodley (Executive Director/Elementary Education). WHY CAN'T THIS DISTRICT HIRE PEOPLE THAT CAN DO THEIR JOB AND DO IT HONESTLY? Paying people to be at their job, only to have them off playing golf or somewhere other than their position is a waist of tax payer money. (JMO)

I would like to say that i agree that Ron Barringer needs to go. I graduated from Springfield the year before he came. So i really dont know how he is but i do know that i have many friends out at the school including teachers and from what i have heard... he isnt a good role model. I think he needs to go back to the school he came from and let someone who actually cares about SMS pride to come in. Springfield is the best middle school in the county and i think we need a leader who stands up for the teachers and students there. I bet if he sees this comment he will go back looking to see who has stated that he isnt good at the school. Well guess what it isnt your business Ron, if you would like to know, just take some interest in the school for a change... that is all i have to say. Thank you

Ron Barringer is only concerned about two things, improving his social status and who has the most money. The students are in the way his agenda. Yes, that school has hit rock bottom in only two short years.

Why the curiousity concerning Mr. Chestnut? It should be fairly obvious why he's leaving. WCS is NOT the place for an educator that is not only serious about raising test scores and educating children but has the numbers to back it up. Parents of students in WCS need to WAKE UP before it's too late.

Wake County doesn't need the Good Old Boy's Network, they already have their own. You get what you vote for that is Dr. Larry Price.

Ronald Barringer needs to GO from Springfield Middle School. He is NOT a role model for anyone. He treats his staff like they are not worthy to work in that school. He cares nothing for the students. He needs to go to another county!! This school has hit ROCK BOTTOM!!!!
