Water safety stressed to students

Zorria Barnes could feel the money in the bottom of the chest filled with water and ice. But she couldn't quite grasp the change with her fingers.

Zorria, a second-grader at Winstead Elementary, kept her hand in the water for only 30 seconds but it was long enough for her to get an idea about the effects of hypothermia and how difficult it would be to swim if she fell into freezing water.

"Very, very cold," Zorria said when asked to describe the water. "Your hand would get frozen."

"Cold Can Kill" was one of 10 stations students visited during the Water Safety Awareness event hosted this week by the American Red Cross at the Wilson County Agriculture Center. This is the second year for the event. Second- and third-graders from Winstead, Stantonsburg and Gardners elementary schools along with Greenfield School participated.

The students were divided into groups of six to eight and rotated every seven to eight minutes to another hands-on activity. Red Cross volunteers manned the stations. Some of the topics covered included swimming with a buddy, not entering the water to try to save someone who is drowning, keeping an eye on the weather and approaching storms, staying hydrated, and wearing life jackets when boating.

"I learned if you see somebody drowning you don't jump in the water unless you are trained," Zorria said.

Libby Privette, health and safety director for the local Red Cross chapter, said teaching children about water safety is important because swimming is not taught in the school system.

"With the summer approaching, we feel that this is an important time and program to share with our local children," Privette said.

Event sponsors included the Rotary Club of Greater Wilson, Wilson All American Kiwanis Club, Wilson Junior Womans Club, Golden Circle Optimist Club, Wilson Evening Optimist Club and Wilson Kiwanis Club.
