Two injured in wreck near Selma

SELMA -- A Wilson woman was being treated at the UNC Burn Center last week following a motorcycle accident Thursday on I-95 near Selma, officials said Monday.

Kedia Pope, 35, and Dennis Earl Pope, 41, of 3215 Fieldstream Drive, were injured after a motorcycle they were riding crashed on the I-95 bridge over Rural Paved Road 1927 and U.S. 70 outside Selma at 7:42 p.m. Thursday, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Wendy Stancil, a secretary in the Highway Patrol office in Johnston County, said the two were transported to Wake Medical Center following the accident. Wake Medical Center officials on Monday could not confirm if Dennis Pope had been admitted, but did say Kedia Pope had arrived and later been transferred to the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill.

Their conditions were not made available.

Stancil said the two were traveling south on I-95 and had passed several cars on the highway using the right, paved shoulder when they traveled back onto the highway. The motorcycle bottomed out, causing the oil pan to catch fire and explode. The motorcycle was traveling around 120 mph on a 65 mph road.

The motorcycle slid off the left side of the road, Stancil said, striking a concrete median barrier and then coming to rest against a concrete barrier on the left shoulder. Both passengers were thrown from the vehicle.

Dennis Pope, the driver, was charged with driving while his license was revoked and reckless driving. The motorcycle damage was estimated at $4,700.

This is the couple that used to speed down the street they lived on too...multiple complaints for speed and noise. Looks like this was an accident waiting to happen. Unfortunate.
