Friday, January 09, 2009 10:36 AM Two arrested after 100 mph chase By Gina Childress Daily Times Staff Writer The Wilson County Sheriff's Office apprehended two men wanted for several first-degree burglaries in Wilson County and for statutory rape in Nash County after a high-speed chase Thursday afternoon. Terrance McNeil Jones, 20, whose last known address was 6508 Juanita Loop, Lucama, and David Anthony Ruffin, 20, whose last known address was 5403 Lloyd Road, Lucama, were captured after a brief car chase that reached speeds in excess of 100 mph on Interstate 95 and N.C. 97. A 911 call received around 2 a.m. Thursday started the chain of events that led to the chase and arrests. According to Lt. Danny Bailey, a Wiggins Mill Road resident called for help after she awoke to find someone standing in the home she shares with a housemate. The suspect, who the sherriff's office identified as Ruffin, stole two pocketbooks and a book that contained information about rental properties that one of the residents owns and manages. Later in the morning, reports started coming in about vehicle break-ins on Wiggins Mill Road, Bluebird Lane, Regatta Court, Rock Ridge School Road and Ivy Court. That led investigators to take a second look at some other vehicle break-ins that happened the previous day. Through the investigation, which was led by Det. T. Bass, investigators were able to track leads that linked all of the incidents together and they identified Ruffin and Jones as suspects. The investigation further revealed both were wanted in Nash County for statutory rape. Bailey said they were able to confirm that one of the suspect's girlfriends worked at a business near the U.S. 264/I-95 exit. Investigators set up surveillance in the parking lot of the business. When deputies saw a 2000 gray Monte Carlo arrive with Ruffin behind the wheel, they tried to approach the vehicle. Bailey said Ruffin sped off, almost striking one of the deputies. A car chase then ensued with Ruffin initially traveling southbound on I-95. Shortly thereafter, Ruffin jumped the median and began traveling northbound on I-95, reaching speeds of over 100 mph. Bailey said Ruffin exited onto N.C. 97 in Nash County, where he pulled into a residential driveway and attempted to drive across a field adjacent to the home. Bailey said that because of the recent rain, the car got stuck in the mud. Ruffin then jumped out of the vehicle and ran. Ruffin was caught and arrested without further incident. Jones, who was in the backseat, remained in the car and was taken into custody without incident. Upon searching the vehicle, investigators said they found property believed to have been stolen in the vehicle break-ins. Bailey said both were transported to the Nash County Jail where they were processed for the outstanding statutory rape warrants. They are scheduled to appear in Nash County Superior Court today and will then be brought back to Wilson, where numerous warrants will be served on them. Both will be charged with two counts of first-degree burglary, one count of felonious breaking and entering, one count of felonious larceny after breaking and entering, seven counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle and seven counts of larceny after breaking and entering a motor vehicle. Ruffin will be charged with reckless endangerment with a motor vehicle, felonious fleeing to elude arrest, speeding 100 mph in a 70 mph zone, stop sign violation, resist/obstruct/delay, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance. "The investigation is continuing," Bailey said. "More charges could be filed once we have finished our investigation." gina@wilsontimes.com | 265-7821 |
