LUCAMA

A Lucama resident was honored Saturday at a military retirement ceremony at Willow Springs Country Club.

Master Sergeant Janice C. Kent, a Black Creek native, was born on May 19, 1956, and graduated from Rock Ridge High School.

In an effort to fulfill a dream of her father's, Kent enlisted in the District of Columbia Army National Guard in 1981.

Among her many accomplishments while serving in the National Guard, Kent worked her way through the ranks and retired as a master seargent. Among her responsibilities during her 28 years of service, Kent was assigned duties including mobilizing, deploying and demobilizing soilders during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

She was also deployed to New Orleans in September 2005 to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Some of the decorations she received during her career include the U.S. Meritorious Service Medal, National Deense Service Medal, DCNG Meritorious Service Medal and DCNG Emergency Service Ribbon.

Now that she has retired, Kent will be residing in Lucama and working as a contractor with Honeywell.
