Town Talk

FREMONT

Come out to Fremont this weekend for an old-fashioned game of "base ball.".

The Charles B. Aycock Historic Site this Sunday will host a Civil War-era game of base ball, the original version of the popular American pastime.

The game became popular during the war and was played by soldiers on both sides including at the Confederate POW camp in Salisbury.

The game will take place at 2 p.m. when the Greensboro Patriots square off against the Nahunta Nine. The game will be played by the original rules, where gloves are not allowed and pitchers must serve the ball underhanded.

For more information, call 919-242-5581.

MIDDLESEX

The town has a new part-time police officer.

Following a closed session at its regular April meeting Monday, the board voted to hire Joe Shattuck as a part-time police officer for the Middlesex Police Department, according to the town meeting minutes.

During the meeting, the board also voted to enter into a contract with Earthtech for engineering services for a town well and water meter project. The engineering services will cost the town $39,325.

The town also voted to set a budget meeting for May 11 during its regular monthly meeting, and voted to set a closed session for Monday to discuss employee performance evaluations. The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the town hall on South Nash Street.

The town, which before did not have a policy regarding the opening of closed session minutes, voted to have the clerk and town administrator open minutes using their judgment and consult the town attorney when in doubt.

The next town meeting will be May 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the town hall. For more information, call 235-5761.

The Kruisin' Kenly event begins Saturday morning downtown, and a kickoff dance will be held Friday night.
