Tuesday, March 03, 2009 10:19 AM Town Talk SHARPSBURG Sharpsburg commissioners will reconsider adopting a 10 percent water and sewer rate increase for both in and out-of-town customers at tonight's meeting. Commissioners at their February meeting voted against the increase, but Commissioner Merv Gibson has asked for the item to be put on the agenda for reconsideration. Town Manager Robert Masters had informed the board that if they did not raise rates, budget problems and staff cuts would result. Masters said Monday that in addition to the rate increase, he will also present board members with several options in lieu of a rate hike. Among them include furloughing town workers by requiring each to take one day off during the week, reducing some employee salaries by 5 percent until the end of the fiscal year and cutting back on travel. Also during the meeting, commissioners will consider setting dates for interviews for a town finance officer position. The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at the town hall on Railroad Street. An agenda meeting will be at 7 p.m. BAILEY A University of North Carolina at Pembroke teacher and administrator from Bailey who died last year was honored with a computer lab named after him.
