Thursday, October 16, 2008 10:25 AM Town Talk KENLY Finger-licking goodness was a recipe for disaster for a Wilson man who crashed his car outside Kenly this weekend. John Fizer, 51, of Wilson crashed his 2008 Toyota Corolla on Richardson Bass Road on Saturday afternoon after he lost control of his vehicle while eating barbecue, said N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Maynard. Maynard said Fizer, who was eating barbecue while traveling back from Nahunta, was traveling fast down the road and lost control of the vehicle. But when he tried to regain control of the vehicle, Maynard said, Fizer's hands were too slippery from the barbecue he was eating. Fizer's car veered off the road, crashing into several trees until it overturned and came to rest on the driver's side. He was charged with reckless driving and driving left of center. Maynard said the accident, which occurred about 2:30 p.m., was not discovered for at least a few hours because Fizer crashed in an area where he couldn't be seen. After authorities reached the scene, Fizer was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. He had no serious injuries, and was later released, Maynard said. At their regular meeting Monday night, Spring Hope commissioners voted to award a $596,132 contract for sewer rehab work in the town to Ormund Utilities of Kinston. The town was awarded a grant from the N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund earlier, which it will use to pay for the work. Also during the meeting, the board authorized Kevin Varnell of Stocks Engineering to look for a new location in town for the town to build a well. The town currently has four wells, and it would use the new well to replace the old Poplar Street well that was taken off the line a few years ago, said Town Manager John Holpe. The town has budgeted $38,000 for the new well. Also during the meeting, the town accepted an anonymous donation of $2,100 for new curtains the auditorium at the Spaulding Family Resource Center. The town also adopted an identity theft prevention program required by the Federal Trade Commission.
