Out-of-town water and sewer customers can now have their trash picked up by the town.

At their regular meeting Monday night, Middlesex commissioners approved providing town trash pickup services to out-of-town customers who pay for town water and sewer services. Out-of-town customers, who pay double the normal rate for water and sewer, would also pay double the regular rate for the trash pickup.

Town Administrator Peggy Bissette said the current rate for town trash pickup is $11.75 a month. Out-of-town customers will pay double that rate.

Also during the meeting, commissioners voted to update all of the town's water meters at a cost of $100,653 for the new meters and software. The town has a grant for the new program, which commissioners were officially told about during the meeting. The N.C. Rural Economic Development Center has awarded the town a $245,000 grant for drilling two new wells and replacing the water meters.

During the meeting, commissioners also:

Tabled motions to change town ordinances and paint two buildings on South Nash Street adjacent to the town hall.

Passed an identity theft prevention program required by the Federal Trade Commission.

Passed a sales tax on heavy equipment rentals and leases.

Received an update on the town's 2007-08 fiscal year audit.
