Town Talk for Tuesday, June 2, 2009

PINETOPS

A Pinetops resident was recently appointed to the N.C. State University Board of Trustees.

Norris Tolson is president and CEO of the N.C. Biotechnology Center, and a former state secretary of commerce and secretary of transportation. He was appointed secretary of revenue under N.C. Gov. Mike Easley and has served two terms in the N.C. House of Representatives.

Tolson, an N.C. State alumnus, will fill the vacancy created by McQueen Campbell's resignation.

Sharpsburg

Sharpsburg commissioners will have their regular meeting Tuesday night in the town hall on Railroad Street.

During the meeting, commissioners will discuss the following:

* A presentation by Julie Bolinger of the N.C. Department of Transportation

* Whether to approve a proposed contract with the town fire department

The town board will also go into closed session to discuss personnel issues.

The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m.

NASH COUNTY

The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded $3.3 million in federal stimulus funds to a Wilson company to begin resurfacing 23 miles of U.S. 64 between the Franklin County line and Winstead Avenue in Nash County.

The money was awarded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson to resurface the road. Work is scheduled to begin as early as July 13 and be finished by Nov. 15. Motorists can expect lane closures during the work.

The project will include milling and resurfacing the highway, applying an overlay of permeable asphalt to the travel lanes and an addition of two feet to each side.
