Town Talk for Thursday July 9, 2009

SHARPSBURG

Sharpsburg commissioners during their regular July meeting Tuesday night tabled a resolution to add town Finance Officer Lenessa Hawkins and Town Administrator Robert Masters as authorized check signers for the town. The board recently hired Hawkins.

The board also tabled a closed session concerning land development.

The board's next meeting will be July 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the town hall on Railroad Street.

BAILEY

The Country Doctor Museum, the oldest in the U.S. dealing with rural health care, was recently awarded a collection of books and online resources that will help with preserving its artifacts, according to a media release from East Carolina University.

The museum late last month received the Connecting to Collections Bookshelf from the Institute of Museum and Library Services in Washington, D.C., in cooperation with the American Association of State and Local History. The museum is one of 19 museums and libraries in the state and 3,000 nationwide to get the award.

The bookshelf, which will offer guidance and expert advice, focuses on collections found in art and history museums and in library special collections. There is also an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens and nature centers.

The resources are a component of a conservation initiative the institute launched in 2006.

ECU operates the Country Doctor Museum.

NASH COUNTY

Local residents this week continued filing for political office in Nash County.

On Wednesday, J.F. "Buddy" Gwaltney III, mayor of Spring Hope, had filed for re-election. David Andrew Griffin on Tuesday had also filed for one of three open commissioner seats in Spring Hope.

The filing period ends July 17.
