Town Talk for Thursday, June 25, 2009

SHARPSBURG

Sharpsburg residents will have a chance tonight to give town commissioners their two cents on the proposed 2009-10 budget.

The town board is holding a public hearing tonight at 6:30 at Town Hall on Railroad Street.

The $5.2 million budget for 2009-10, presented to the town board late May, keeps the property tax rate at 50 cents per $100 valuation but hikes electric, water and sewer rates.

The town's electric rate is increased by 6 percent, its water rate by 11.5 percent and its sewer rate by 7.41 percent.

The town recycling and garbage rates have also been increased from $4.50 to $8 and $12.25 to $20 per month, respectively.

The budget can be viewed at the town hall. Commissioners could vote on the proposed budget following the public hearing.

BAILEY

A Bailey native was recently named North Carolina Preceptor of the Year by UNC School of Pharmacy.

Vickie Ripley is the coordinator for pharmacy services and clinical pharmacist at Coastal Plain Hospital, the Bryant T. Aldridge Rehabilitation Center and Hospice and Palliative Care of Nash General Hospital. She works with advanced fourth-year pharmacy doctoral candidates and focuses on psychiatric and hospice medical care.

Ripley also serves as an adjunct professor with the UNC School of Pharmacy.

NASH COUNTY

Nash County commissioners at a special meeting last Friday voted to restore half the funds it took from the Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools earlier this year.

Commissioners voted to use $400,000 from its fund balance to restore part of the $800,000 it took from the school system this year to combat decreasing county revenues.

Nash County Manager Bob Murphy said commissioners had expressed interest in restoring part or all of the funding. The 2009-10 budget calls for restoring those funds for next fiscal year.
