Town Talk for Thursday, June 18

KENLY

Longtime council member Scott Turik will not run for re-election this November.

Turik is mayor pro-tem on the council and has served for more than 20 years as mayor, mayor pro-tem and councilman.

Turik said he simply feels it is time to give someone else a shot at the seat.

"I'm old, I've been there a long time and it's time for somebody new to take over," Turik said.

Turik's seat is up for grabs, along with Mayor Herbert "Tooie" Hales' seat and Councilman Mark Smith's seat.

Filing for municipal elections begins July 6 and ends July 17.

BAILEY

Bailey commissioners have been given assignments to new town departments, said Town Clerk Becky Smith.

The new assignments are: Commissioner Troy Conner, streets commissioner; Commissioner Angelo Cox, maintenance commissioner; Commissioner Jerry Bissette, police commissioner; Commissioner Shelley Carroll, cemetery commissioner; Commissioner Judy Rogers, water and sewer commissioner.

The reassignments, a decision of Mayor Owen Strickland, take effect July 1.

Also during their Monday meeting, commissioners gave W.K. Dickson of Raleigh permission to go ahead with the third phase of soil sampling from land the town is considering for expanding its spray field.

The town had samples taken on a previous piece of land, but the land was found unsuitable for sprayfield expansion.

NASH COUNTY

Nash Health Care announced recently its new PET scanner has begun screening patients at its hospital system.

There are only two hospital systems in the state with such a scanner, the other being UNC Hospitals.

The PET (positron emission technology) scanner, featuring highly sophisticated HD technology, is a diagnostic scanner that gives information on how organs are functioning. The technology helps with determining the type and stage of various cancers.
