Town Talk for Thursday, June 11, 2009

SHARPSBURG

The town may have to wait longer than anticipated to get additional state funding to pay for a $4.2 million sewer rehabilitation project.

Town Administrator Robert Masters said town officials met Tuesday with members of the state's Local Government Commission about borrowing $1 million to match a $3 million grant and $1.2 million loan it is getting from the USDA for the project. But commission members were hesitant about loaning money to the town in light of its past budget problems.

The commission wants the town to finish its yearly audit early, by July 21, instead of later in the fall. The commission will then decide whether to loan the money depending on the audit's results. The town could receive the money by August if it is approved.

Masters said he is confident the town will do well on the audit.

KENLY

A new nondenominational church has opened in Kenly.

Husband and wife pastors Joe and Justeen McDougald opened Delightful Temple Ministries at 609 W. First St. behind Piggly Wiggly.

Joe McDougald said the church will have Sunday services on the first through third Sunday each month. Sunday school will be at 10 a.m., and the worship service will be at 11 a.m. The church phone number is 919-262-3882.

He said the church's sanctuary is finished, but work remains elsewhere, including on a proposed gym and game room adjacent to the church.

He said he and his wife are happy to work to better Kenly. "The Lord laid into our hearts that this is where we would start our ministry," McDougald said.

NASH COUNTY

Sharon Adams was selected as Nurse of the Year, Dorothy Mills was selected as Nursing Assistant of the Year, and Marlene Everette was named Nurse Leader of the Year. Kim Johnson was recognized as a Friend of Nursing.

Nash Health Care is a county-owned nonprofit health care system comprised of four hospitals on a single campus.
