Monday, May 11, 2009 5:32 PM Town Talk for May 12 SHARPSBURG Sharpsburg commissioners tonight will continue the task of trying to close a $292,464 hole in the town's general fund for the 2009-10 FY budget. Robert Masters, town administrator, said the town could have to look at several options to balance next year's budget, including even a utility fee hike. This March, the town raised its water and sewer rates by 10 percent each and in December raised its electric rate by 16 percent. The town, which had its first budget session Thursday, made no decision about the upcoming budget. They will meet tonight again, from 6 to 8 in the town hall on Railroad Street. The meeting is open to the public. FARMVILLE Farmville was recently awarded $3 million in federal stimulus funds to finish a three-phase project to connect the town to the Greenville Utilities Commission's system. The town learned this month it will receive $3 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to go toward the third phase of its connection. Town Manager Richard Hicks said the third phase will include running a large water line along Moye-Turnage Road to bring water to the town. JOHNSTON COUNTY The Johnston County Public Health Department will be having free screenings May 27 as part of its Health and Wellness Campaign. The event will be from 1:30 to 6 p.m. at the health department at 517 N. Bright Leaf Blvd. in Smithfield. Children ages 4 and up can get vision and hearing testing. Additional screenings are offered.
