Town Talk, May 21

STANTONSBURG

The Stantonsburg Kiwanis Club recently chose Jerry Overman Boykin's yard for their May Yard of the Month.

Boykin's yard, at 702 S. Main St., was chosen based on beauty and landscaping. The judges were Dan and Marguerite Whitley.

FREMONT

After a brief hiatus, the Fremont History Museum has reopened.

John Pippin, president of the Fremont Historical Society, said the museum will open this Sunday from 2-4 p.m. The museum, located on Main Street, will be open the second and forth Sunday of each month thereafter.

For school or group tours, contact Pippin at 919-222-8441.

NASH COUNTY

The Nash Health Care Systems Board of Commissioners recently passed a resolution opposing a sales tax reimbursement cap being looked at by the N.C. Senate's finance committee.

At their May 7 meeting, the board voted to oppose the measure, which would limit the sales tax reimbursement N.C. nonprofit hospitals could get to a $5 million-per-year maximum. Twice a year, hospitals in the state with nonprofit status get reimbursements for sales taxes they pay on items they buy.

Dawn Wilson, a spokesperson for the hospital system, said the system generally gets about $2 million per year back, but board members felt it important to oppose a restriction on that source of income for nonprofit hospitals.
