Robert Strickland III, 17, was traveling north on Bloomery Road around 3:30 p.m. in a grayish-silver Nissan 4x4 pickup truck when he struck a directional sign while entering a curve near 5158 Bloomery Road. According to Trooper C. Purvis with the N.C. Highway Patrol, Strickland's truck hit the directional sign, struck a driveway pole, crossed through Clayton Haynes' front yard at 5158 Bloomery Road, splintered a utility pole and finally came to rest in some trees and bushes after striking a pine tree. Strickland, who was the only passenger in the vehicle, was ejected about 20 feet from the truck when EMS arrived on the scene. Stickland's truck was missing its back right tire and the right side of the vehicle was heavily damaged. Purvis said it was too early in the investigation of the accident to say exactly what caused Strickland's vehicle to leave the roadway. "I do not want to speculate at this time," Purvis said. "I will have to speak with the driver before I can make a determination as to the cause." gina@wilsontimes.com | 265-7821 |
