Storms cut power

The heavy thunderstorms and high winds that rolled through Wilson Sunday evening left at least 50 Wilson Energy customers without power.

The scattered electric outages were reported around 9 p.m.

Most of the residential outages were in the Dunn Crossroads and Lake Wilson Road areas and were caused by damage to a lightning arrestor, a device that protects electrical equipment from lightning damage, said Fred Horne, Wilson's director of utilities.

About 20 customers were also affected when a tree fell on power lines along N.C. Alternate 264, between the N.C. 264 bypass and Sims.

Other smaller outages were caused by fallen tree limbs or blown fuses. Power was fully restored within two hours of the damage, Horne said.

Electric outages and toppled trees were also reported in areas around Raleigh Sunday evening after a cold front moving across the Carolinas produced a number of severe thunderstorms.

Progress Energy Carolinas reported 398 people without power early this morning, down from 10,000 on Sunday. Duke Energy reported 83 homes without power in the Carolinas as of 4:30 a.m. this morning.

The National Weather Service said some of the storms brought winds over 60 mph and nickel-sized hail. All of the severe storm warnings over the Carolinas had expired by late Sunday night as the systems moved offshore.

Forecasters said they expect calmer weather today with temperatures for most of the region in the 80s.
