Sounds funny calling $3.69 a good gas deal

If you happen to be traveling on U.S. 64 through Martin County anytime this weekend, it will be worth your while to exit in the town of Williamston.

The home of the Sen. Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center is temporarily the home of cheaper gas. I was in Williamston all day Wednesday. My mom and I were driving along, chatting about something, when I saw it.

The gigantic sign in front of the new Murphy USA gas station said $3.69 per gallon. "WHAT?????"

My mom was laughing at me. She said it's been chaos since the station opened a week or so ago. I looked over at her gas gauge. It was full. But get this ... she didn't even have to fight the crowd at the new gas station because most of the chain convenience stores have followed their lead. Everywhere I looked, gas was $3.69. The exception was most of the mom and pop stores. They are still charging more than $4 a gallon.

We all know gas is ridiculous, but we have to have it, so we keep buying it. I live in Fremont, so I can't walk to work. I guess I could bike to the newspaper office every morning, but first, I'd have to get a bike. I'd have to start probably about 4 a.m., and I'd have to figure out how to legally attach two car seats to the bike. As you can see, that is pretty much out of the question. Scooters and mopeds pose the same car seat problem.

So, every week, and sometimes twice a week, I pull my Impala to the pump, and I leave frowning, some $60 later. It's worse with my husband's truck. It's a full-size Chevy, and it costs around $110 to fill up. Thank goodness his line of work does not require him to have to drive his personal vehicle every day.

On Wednesday, I watched one man fill up his trunk's gas tank and then proceed to fill up about eight gas cans in the back of his truck. He wasn't about to let a good deal pass him by. It sounds funny calling $3.69 a good deal.

I know the gas prices are hitting everyone hard. I've tried to think of ways to conserve and have come up with a few.

I try to bring my lunch to work when I can. It saves gas and saves money, which I'll need later for more gas. I've been to my local grocery store for diapers, and even though I paid $1 more for the pack, I still saved more than that in gas by not driving to the big retail store 15 miles from my house.

I also make lists and try to run all my errands at one time. I make it a point not to backtrack. I keep my air filter clean. Believe it or not, that helps gas mileage. And when my friends offer to drive somewhere, I let them!

If you have any good gas-saving tips, feel free to share them. Once I get a good list, I'll share it with all the readers!
