Rain came in buckets Tuesday
Clouds won't part until Friday

After a deluge Tuesday morning led to flooding and road closures in Wilson, thunderstorms today and Thursday could keep things soggy until a quick warm-up later this week drives temperatures into the high 90s.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh says there is a chance of showers today and Thursday, which could lead to thunderstorms and drop another tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain across central North Carolina both days.

But the forecast Friday is sunny and hot, with a high of 98.

But things could get stormy again over the weekend, with more thunderstorms expected Saturday.

City and county officials said Tuesday morning's heavy rainfall caused road closures at the intersection of Glendale and Medical Park drives, the southbound lane of U.S. 301 and a portion of Forest Hills Road. The downpour also flooded portions of Black Creek Road, Jayne Lane, Woodland Road, Ripley Road, Lodge Street and Mercer Street.

All roads in the city and county had been re-opened by Tuesday afternoon.

Kolly Burritt, public information officer for the Wilson Police Department, said no major accidents were reported due to Tuesday's rains.

Ryan Ellis, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said about 2 inches of rain had been dumped across Wilson County by noon Tuesday, with areas north and east of the city seeing in excess of 2 inches.

Bryant Bunn, city engineer, said 3.45 inches of rain had been recorded between Monday and Tuesday by noon at the water treatment plant on Forest Hills Road.

Additional rain was expected Tuesday night.

While morning drivers may have had trouble navigating the wet roads Tuesday, they weren't the only ones who got caught in the rain.

Williams Day Camp on Mount Vernon Drive had flooding in a parking lot of the building, forcing activities there to be cancelled.

At the Wilson Recreation Park Community Center, a creek near the facility experienced some flooding. Helen Bass, recreation center and programs coordinator, said the facility had not been flooded during the downpour.

Bass said all recreation activities would be held at the community recreation center today.

Parents can call 399-2263 or 399-2266 if they have any questions.
