No big splash at Kenly pool this summer

KENLY -- The Kenly Community Pool will likely stay closed this year in light of budget problems and a host of other issues.

Kenly Mayor Herbert L. "Tooie" Hales II said Thursday that there is little chance needed repairs and upgrades will be made in time for the pool to open this season.

Hales said the pool needs to have close to $1,000 in upgrades to its drain covers, the result of a recent state law. Repairs to pavement around the pool, painting and other general maintenance issues also need to be taken care of.

The problem, Hales said, is the pool budget only has $400.

The Kenly Community Pool, a private pool that opened in the 1960s, is run by a nine-member board and three executive officers. Hales is the pool's president this year. Members pay annual dues for usage.

The pool normally opens Memorial Day weekend.

Hales said raising the money will difficult, as membership is down to about 40 or 50 people and has been declining for years. But other issues may affect the pool staying open.

"The big question is whether we're going to have enough members to go a full season," Hales said.

Additionally, he said, the board is having trouble getting members involved in repairing the pool and must revise its bylaws. Both require proactive pool members.

The community pool is the only one in Kenly.
