Monday, June 15, 2009 4:32 PM Ms. Rail Rose to celebrate five years in Wilson By Rochelle Moore | Times Staff Writer Children and adults will celebrate the 5th birthday of Ms. Rail Rose, a concrete sculpture, Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Wilson train station. Mayor Bruce Rose will attend the event, along with Arts Council Director Barry Page, the main speaker. Rebecca Tighe, the children's librarian for the Wilson County Library, will provide storytelling for children. The event is primarily geared for children, ages 4-10. Cupcakes and ice cream will be served and a K-9 demonstration may also take place. "It's something to do for the kids and it's something to have downtown," said Wyatt Caughman, interim manager for the Wilson Downtown Development Corp., which coordinates the annual event. "They enjoy the trains riding by, we have the children's librarian and they really enjoy the K-9 demonstration." Ms. Rail Rose was created by two North Carolina artists, Virginia Bullman and Lanelle Davis. Their focus was to create a sculpture that honored working women. In 2003, an 8-year-old, 3rd grade Vinson-Bynum Elementary School student, Bri-Anna Lewis, named the sculpture Rail Rose as part of a school-wide train lady naming contest. Lewis won out of 203 entries. |
