Wednesday, July 16, 2008 10:43 AM Man arrested on drug charges after fleeing police By Gina Childress | Times Staff Writer After leading Wilson police on a chase, a Wake County man was arrested and will face several drug charges, Wilson police said Tuesday. Lorenzo Rodricus Ward, 36, of 21 Mariner Court in Raleigh, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle for the sale of a controlled substance and fleeing to elude apprehension. As a result of a drug investigation, Wilson detectives attempted to stop Ward's vehicle near Snowden Drive and August Circle on Monday afternoon when Ward fled and a chase ensued, said Officer Kolly Burritt, spokesperson with the Wilson Police Department. The chase, which officers said reached speeds of around 60 miles per hour, went down Lane Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and U.S. 264 before coming to an end in the area of Black Creek Road and Wilco Boulevard. Law enforcement officers from the police department, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office and the N.C. Highway Patrol banded together searching for the suspect. A perimeter was established and Ward was eventually located on Contentnea Road by a N.C. Highway Patrol officer. According to police, an undisclosed amount of drugs were recovered from the vehicle and Ward was taken into custody and transported to the Wilson County Jail. He was placed under a $5,000 secured bond. Ward's criminal records reflect that this is not his first brush with police. Stemming back to 1996, he has been convicted of two counts of possession with intent to sell a controlled substance, three counts of possession of a schedule I controlled substance, assault on a female, assault on a public official and several traffic violations. gina@wilsontimes.com | 265-7821 |
