Homeownership promoted at luncheon

The Wilson Housing Authority recognized individuals who have made steps to become homeowners during a recent luncheon in Wilson.

Edward Jagnandan, WHA director, initiated the homeownership program in an effort to help people improve the quality of their lives and to gain a sense of independence by owning, instead of renting, a home. The program is now available to people living in Section 8 or other public housing.

Individuals and families who qualify for a mortgage can tap into the Housing Choice Voucher program and receive monthly assistance, based on their income, toward their mortgage for 15 years. Families who are disabled can receive assistance for the life of the loan up to 30 years.

The luncheon was held not only to recognize the accomplishments of several potential and future homeowners but also to recognize June as National Homeownership Month. Etia McNeil, the first voucher program homeownership participant to close on a new home, was praised for her efforts and certificates were given to people who completed the required homeownership classes. Currently there are seven families pre- qualified for mortgage loans. Members of the Wilson Housing Authority board, housing and bank representatives and Mayor Bruce Rose attended the event.

The homeownership program is one of several initiatives of the Housing Authority to help people rely less on public housing assistance.
