Fireworks and baseball go together

Baseball is said to be as American as apple pie. And this year, area ballparks will be the place for fireworks fans to get their Fourth fix.

The Wilson Tobs will hold the only fireworks display in the county, following their game with the Wilmington Sharks. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. so the skies above historic Fleming Stadium will light up some time after 9 p.m.

The Tobs are planning around a 15-minute show, complete with patriotic music.

General admission tickets to the game and show are $6 for adults, $4 for senior citizens and for children. Kids under 5 are admitted free. Stop by the box office at the stadium, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, or call 291-TOBS for more information.

Wilson Mall, then Parkwood Mall, traditionally held a fireworks show every Independence Day, launching from Vinson-Bynum Elementary School's athletic fields.

But in 2007, the mall threw its support behind the Tobs' show. It hasn't had a show since then.

Also Saturday, the Carolina Mudcats will hold a firework display after its game with the Tennessee Smokies. That game will begin around 7:15 p.m., with the fireworks show expected around 9:30, depending on the length of the game. Call 919-269-2287 or go to www.gomudcats.com for more information.

Many Wilsonians will head Friday to Rocky Mount for its annual Independence celebration, always held one day early. Gates will open at 6 p.m. at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex, with opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. The Andrew Thielen Big Band is then scheduled to perform, followed by fireworks at 9:15 p.m. There is no charge. The park is located off U.S. 264 at Exit 469, four miles east of Interstate 95.

In Wayne County, Pikeville's Independence Day Festival, featuring what is traditionally one of the largest fireworks displays in the area, was held last Saturday.

The fireworks are great! We all owe a debt of gratitude to Thomas and Farris for putting this display on! So thank-you so much.

THIS MAKE IT BAD BECAUSE TO MANY COME TO THE GAME TO DRINK BEER AND SEE THE FIREWORKS AND RUN UP AND DOWN SO THE ONES THAT WANT TO SEE THE GAMES CANNOT SEE THE GAME.
