"The phone never rings that early and it is good news," she said. She and her husband were awakened to the news that one of the buildings at their business was destroyed by fire. Paulette and Gene Camp own and operate P&G Flea Market at 3122 U.S. 301. The business was formerly known as Mildred's Flea Market and is located behind Ray's Drive-In near Wiggins Mill Road. The Camps have operated the flea market, which is open year round, for approximately 25 years and owned the business for the last 15. "This sure has made a mess," Gene Camp said. The building that was destroyed was the office where the operation of the business was centralized. "My office is pretty much gone," he said. According to the Camps, firefighters from Contentnea, Black Creek and Lucama volunteer fire departments responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze in about an hour. "The firemen told us that they think the fire started in the motor of the refrigerator that was in my office," Gene Camp said. "They think it just shorted out." Lost in the fire were a new television, several coffee pots, the refrigerator, snacks and other items, Gene Camp said. "Thank goodness this was our slow season," Paulette Camp said with tears streaming down her cheeks. Teresa Morris, an acquaintance of the Camps and employee of Ray's Drive-In, said she called 911 when one of the employees saw fire coming from the building. "I called 911, and they were here pretty quick," Morris said. "I hate this for them (the Camps). I'm just glad nobody was in there." The Camps said they had several cats in the building but believe all made it out safely. "We don't have insurance because nobody will insure a flea market," Paulette Camp said. "We are going to rebuild and keep going. That's all you can do." Damage to the building is estimated around $1,000. gina@wilsontimes.com | 265-7821 |

Burning the flea market down has probably ADDED to the value of the land. Sorry to sound mean, but this really is an eyesore.
