Dog call leads to drug bust By Gina Childress | Daily Times Staff Writer Animal Control officers responding to a "dog running at large" call ended up finding more than animals at an Elm City residence. According to the investigative report, Deputies T. Myrick and M. Wingo of the Wilson County Sheriff's Office were called to the 200 to 300 block of South Barnes Street Wednesday to check on a dog that was running in the neighborhood. Myrick and Wingo noticed a white pit bull that was chained in the front yard of Richard Mitchell's house at 306 S. Barnes St. "I spoke with Mr. Mitchell who stated that his dog had not been off the chain that he could recall," Myrick said in his report. "I asked if his dogs had rabies shots and he stated that he did not know if they did." At that point Myrick told Mitchell, 38, that he was going to write him a warning ticket to have his three adult dogs and "some puppies" vaccinated. Needing more information for his warning ticket, Myrick told Mitchell he needed to go to the back yard of the residence to get a description of the other dogs when he saw two marijuana plants, about 4-feet tall, growing in a black pot beside the house. The deputies then placed Mitchell under arrest and charged him with felony possession of drug paraphernalia and possession with the intent to sell and manufacture marijuana. Because the marijuana plants were growing next to his home, the deputies asked to search the residence and Mitchell consented. The search turned up several marijuana pipes, two small amounts of marijuana, rolling papers and a scale. He is still in the Wilson County Jail under a $7,500 secured bond. A review of the N.C. Department of Correction records revealed that Mitchell received probation in 1994 and in 1997 for driving while license revoked and misdemeanor employment security commission violation. gina@wilsontimes.com | 265-7821
