County puts up 'for sale' signs

LAND FOR SALE -- Good deals, motivated seller, choice of 18 locations.

In this economy, none of those details is unusual, except the identity of the seller -- Wilson County.

The county's ongoing tax collection program has left it with an unusually large backlog of foreclosed properties, Ellis Williford, county manager, said Wednesday.

The county has no use for these lots, most of which are in the city, so selling them would clear them off the books.

But the chance to bring in a little money "was part of the thinking also," Williford said with a laugh. "Not just the sales revenue, but we're not collecting taxes on them now. It'd be beneficial if someone would develop them."

The properties are listed on the county's Web site, www.wilson-co.com, and each is marked with a "for sale" sign. The county has set a $2,500 minimum offer for each, although nearly all are valued at more than twice that.

One -- 6401 E. Langley Road, Elm City -- includes a house and is valued at $36,765.

A quarter-acre industrial lot at 501 Herring Ave. is valued at $13,383.

The other properties, including tax values, are 6713 Shannon Road, Saratoga, $12,000; 825 Mercer St., $6,000; 817 Mercer St., $10,000; 409 Hines St., $5,500; 659 Wiggins St., $4,000; 805 Gay St., $10,000; 400 Grace St., $1,200; 633 Viola St., $6,800; 507 Lane St., $8,000; 1101 Atlantic St., $8,000; 1114 Queen St., $8,000; 704 Viola St., $7,200; landlocked lot on Finch Street, $4,000; 608 Carroll St., $6,000; and two adjoining properties at 4912 Webb Lake Road, total value of $15,650.

Any offer to buy property must go through a 10-day period when upset bids can be accepted.

For more information, call Williford's office, 399-2803.
