Community celebrates black history

By Stephanie Creech | Times Senior Writer

Students and community members gathered at the Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts and Education in Wilson Friday afternoon for the school's annual Black History celebration.

The theme for the celebration was "Black History Heroes."

Using a combination of poems, music, dance and art, the students highlighted the contributions of many African-Americans to this country. Students read poetry by Langston Hughes and fourth- and fifth-grade students in the theater program performed a skit about the life of opera singer Leontyne Price.

Art work by fourth- and fifth-graders of historical figures, such as civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., were showcased during a video.

Staff member DeeAnn Macomson read a poem, "Tomorrow's History," which she wrote in honor of the celebration. Macomson also spoke about how since moving to Wilson she feels at home working at the school.

Staff member Latonya Carmon's renditions of the songs "I Am Free" and "Precious Lord" had the crowd on its feet applauding. Other musical performances included the fourth- and fifth-grade chorus singing "OH' Freedom" and the middle school chorus singing "Freedom Is Coming." The school's Jazz Ensemble presented "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "Manteca."

The school's namesake, Sallie B. Howard, commended the students for their performances and for their behavior. She reminded the students they must learn to do things for themselves in life instead of depending on others.
