Child's curiosity could have started fire on Rasberry
By Gina Childress | Staff Writer
A child's curiosity and a cigarette lighter are suspected to have started a fire at 3913 Rasberry Drive Tuesday evening.
Mike Brown, battalion commander with Wilson Fire and Rescue Services, said the fire began on a bed when the sheets and comforter were ignited.
Charles and Cecil Edwards, who rent the dwelling, were at home when the blaze began. EMS was called to the scene as a precaution but no injuries were reported.
Ben Huston, Life Safety Educator with Wilson Fire and Rescue Services, said a child's lack of fire safety or understanding can add to a child's curiosity.
"It is natural for a child to be curious about fire," he said. "It is not natural for a child to play with fire. No matter what age you are, you are going to be curious. As responsible adults, we should steer them (children) in the right direction to learn about and respect the dangers."
As a must for parents, Huston said lighters and matches should not be available to children for any reason.
"If there are matches or lighters in the home, those items should be kept secured or protected by the parents," Huston said. "Parents should treat those items no differently than keeping sharp knives or prescription medications away from children."
Seven units responded with 18 personnel remaining on the scene for more than two hours.
The home, which is owned by William T. Camp and managed by Bissette Realty, is valued at $147,918 and damage is estimated at $25,000.
