Band of Oz back in town
By Matt Shaw | Times Staff Writer
The award-winning Band of Oz finally should make its Downtown Alive debut next Wednesday.
Storms washed away both of the beach band's dates last year as part of the Wilson Downtown Development Corporation's concert series.
Barring bad weather yet again, Wednesday's event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Renfrow lot on South Tarboro Street, between Womble Hardware and Newcomb Lighting. The band is scheduled to perform from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
The Band of Oz has, of course, performed many times in Wilson over the years. The band formed more than 40 years ago in Grifton as The Avengers and became the Band of Oz in 1970.
Primarily a cover band at first, it began recording its own music, including singles "Shaggin'," "Star of My Life" and "Ocean Boulevard," which was a Beach Music Association "Song of the Year" selection. "Shama Lama Ding Dong" was the People's Choice Song of the Year at the Cammy Awards in 1995.
The membership has changed over the years. It now includes eight musicians, including a full horn section.
People attending the concert may take lawn chairs or blankets, but they should not bring coolers or pets. Refreshments will be for sale, including soft drinks, hot dogs, pizza, chicken sandwiches, snow cones and ice cream. Adults with IDs can buy beer, margaritas and sangria.
Down Alive is supported completely by contributions. P.L. Woodard & Womble Hardware sponsor this show.
Concerts are scheduled every other Wednesday through Oct. 7. The next Downtown Alive will be the Alabama Blues Band June 17.
