Back in session By Stephanie Creech Daily Times Senior Writer ELM CITY -- Chastity Jackson admits she lets her sons "run wild" during the summer. But she's more than ready to get the boys back on a schedule since the new school year started this morning for the more than 12,000 children enrolled in Wilson County Schools. Jackson was at Elm City Elementary making sure her youngest sons, Chase, a fifth-grader, and Dean, a second-grader, made it to their classes. She didn't encounter any problems getting the boys up and ready for school this morning. "They were up before I was and ready to go," Jackson said. Chase and Dean even picked out what clothes they would wear for the first day of school before they went to bed last night. Chase said he was looking forward to school because he wanted to see some of his friends. This summer, Chase and Dean went to a water park and helped celebrate their older brother's birthday. Elm City Elementary Principal Debora Ray expected about 415 students to show up for school. A few parents were dealing with enrollment or bus issues. Ray had staff at tables in the front lobby of the school so parents with issues could find answers. For the most part, the first day got off to a good start at Elm City Elementary. Ray and her staff have been working hard getting ready for the students. Ray said some of her teachers started work about a month ago. For the past two weeks, the school's staff has been working almost around the clock. Ray said they have a shared vision this year to make sure every child at Elm City Elementary gets where they need to be academically no matter what it takes. Myasia Lucas pulled pencils out of her backpack while she waited for her class to start. Myasia is in Paula Loges' second-grade class. Myasia's grandfather had dropped her off at school since her mother had to go to work. Myasia spent her summer in day care program, where she got to skate, watch television and go to the park. "I didn't get to be free," she said. But Myasia did travel. "I go to this place called Atlanta every year," she said as she looked into the bag of school supplies on top of her desk. Loges greeted each parent and child at the door. Even though Loges has been teaching for almost 30 years, she still gets excited about the start of school. Loges is also celebrating her birthday today. This is her second year at Elm City Elementary. Loges planned to review class rules and procedures with her 23 students. She also planned to do some review work then jump in and start teaching. "Every day is different and you never know what is going to happen," Loges said. creech@wilsontimes.com | 265-7822 |
