Wednesday, July 01, 2009 9:36 AM HIV event help many people This past Friday, an event took place in Wilson and the surrounding counties that started a movement that will change the face of Wilson and Wilson County forever. The event that took place wasn't an election, a major accident or storm. It was an event in honor and observance of National HIV Testing Day. National HIV Testing Day is observed each year on June 27, but instead of observing it on that day it was observed a day before, hoping to bring more attention to it during a Friday. In the City of Wilson and the surrounding communities, the Wilson County HIV Task Force held an all day event that started at 7 a.m. and went on until 8 that evening. The task force offered health information along with free and confidential HIV Rapid testing at nine locations. Each site had a team of qualified people to give information and administrate testing to the countless people who accepted the challenge "To Take Charge and To Know" what their HIV status is or may be. The City of Wilson and Wilson County has a high rate of HIV. I am not sharing this to put shame to HIV or Wilson. I am sharing this to bring attention to this disease, hoping that many more will join in the fight against HIV/AIDS. I have worked in the HIV arena for a little over seven years; I love and appreciate what I do, which is sharing my knowledge about HIV/AIDS to those who may not know, thinking that it would help someone down the road. I honestly believe what I do can either help improve a life or save a life. Because of what happened Friday, more people now know their HIV status, many more have more knowledge about HIV/AIDS and many more people have joined the fight against HIV/AIDS.
