Cool threads, blue tunes
Donald Underwood Thompson Band plays Wednesday

The Donald Underwood Thompson Band will have Wilsonians singing the blues Wednesday.

The Kinston-based rhythm & blues band is next up in the Downtown Alive concert series.

The concert is set to take place on an outdoor stage on Tarboro Street, but rain has already forced two of four Downtown Alive concerts this year indoors.

The Donald Thompson Band includes five veteran musicians who play a wide variety of R&B standards, including Muddy Waters' "Hootchie Coochie Man," Wilbert Harrison's "Kansas City," and B.B. King's "The Thrill is Gone."

But they also cover songs done by Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Grateful Dead. In many cases, the band applies its own style to these songs, according to its Web site.

The group is also known its colorful stage attire, meant to "harken back to the 'cool threads' worn by the artists of the 1930s and '40s," the Web site says.

Thompson, the band's lead signer, has performed for festivals, colleges, television audiences, libraries, arts councils and coffeehouses and has performed at the same venues as four-time Grammy winner David Holt, the popular folk group Molasses Creek and award-winning singer/songwriter Catesby Jones.

The other band members are Jackie Holland, harmonica and guitar; Chris Jenkins, lead guitar; Jason Smith, drums; and Carroll Wade, bass guitar.

People attending the concert may take lawn chairs or blankets, but they should not bring coolers or pets. Refreshments will be for sale, including soft drinks, hot dogs, pizza, chicken sandwiches, snow cones and ice cream. Adults with IDs can buy beer, margaritas and sangria.

Downtown Alive
Downtown Alive will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at the Renfrow lot on South Tarboro Street, between Womble Hardware and Newcomb Lighting. The Donald Thompson Band will perform from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Torero's Mexican Restaurant is sponsoring this show.

Concerts are scheduled every other Wednesday through Oct. 7. The next Downtown Alive will be the Jim Quick & Coastline July 15.
